This painting was a bit of a turning point for me. Not a monumental departure from my normal style, but a signal that I was wanting to incorporate more abstracts into my work. I painted it at a time I was finding excitement in my art again, which is why I marked it with the words "help me find me again" – to remind myself anytime I look at it that painting is, once again, my way back to who I truly am. I call this character Mister Robot and it was the first time I ever painted him. Fun fact: many have asked about the equation in the top left corner, but to my knowledge, only one person – my friend's elementary-school-aged son – has ever taken the time to figure out what all the numbers add up to: 2017, the year I painted it.
