"All my chicks are in the nest!"
This statement began my love of painting birds' nests. When my oldest came home from college for the first time I knew the true feelings behind it. I've painted nests on pillows, Christmas ornaments, benches, and everything in between. I love to paint custom nests for clients and their specific family members...children, parents, pets, whatever is represented in their "nest". The tall space above my mantel in my family room is never without a nest of this size. The background colors change and the egg positions differ but always with three eggs tucked in securely.
I begin the nest using a texture medium and paint it off one side. The nest itself and the background are usually abstract in nature while the eggs are much more realistic. I absolutely love painting on large canvases this size and using big brushes and even bigger brush strokes. Painting the eggs is my favorite part. I love the oval shapes and placing them together.
This year more than ever my own nest has been busy, full, and well-loved. I've had all my chicks in the nest more than I ever thought possible after they got their driver's licenses! But nests are always launching pads, as well as places of refuge.
This nest has charcoal grey, chocolate brown, navy, and other neutrals in the background while the eggs are beautiful shades of turquoise and aqua. They are definitely the "stars" of the show. I hope this statement piece of art will always bring joy to your nest!
